Το PlayStation 5 θα κυκλοφορήσει το 2019 το νωρίτερο, λέει ο διευθύνων σύμβουλος της Ubisoft

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot commented about when he expects the PlayStation 5 (or PS5 for short) and the next Xbox to launch during the latest Ubisoft financials. GI.biz cobbled together the relevant info with a short quote from the CEO who promptly laid out what he believes to be the roadmap for release when it comes to the next generation of home consoles, saying…

“”As Sony launched PlayStation 4 Pro last year and Microsoft Xbox One X this year, we think we still have a minimum of two years in front of us before something new is coming,” […] “But that’s our perception, we don’t have any confidential information on that front.”

So, a minimum of two years puts the PS5 and Xbox Whatever at a holiday 2019 release. Would Microsoft so readily abandon the Xbox One X just two years later? Sure. They did it with Kinect 2.0.

The question is, would Sony abandon the PS4 Pro just a few years after introducing it to the market? Three years seems like a short lifespan for a mid-gen refresh, no?

Then again, the PS4 Pro isn’t necessarily smoking up the charts these days. Sony, on the monthly NPD charts, is being soundly beaten to the white meat like a child in an abusive home in the poor parts of Compton… or a female cohort going on a date with a male feminist. Nintendo is just wiping the floor with them with the Switch, so it wouldn’t be too surprising that Sony would want to cut their loses and try something new in two years… in an attempt to stay competitive, of course.

Right now Sony is in a comfortable lead over its two console-making competitors, but interest has severely waned in the PlayStation products, with a lot of people seemingly buying the consoles as a convenience rather than as a must-have device.

However, Guillemot disagrees, he feels like the incremental power upgrade was necessary, saying…

“We really like the fact that Sony and Microsoft are really putting more power in their machines, using the evolution of technology to give power to our developers to create better games for our players,”

“That is going in the right direction rather than trying to do accessories or other things. That is going to help the industry a lot because the games will be really beautiful on those machines.”

Greatly disagree here.

The upgrade so far hasn’t done much for the PS4 Pro titles other than bump up some of the resolutions from 1080p to 1440p or 1800p or in some rare cases to 2160p. The same applies for the Xbox One X; minor bumps up in the resolution, and sometimes with the trade-off of 1080p with increased FPS to 60 instead of 30.

So far, none of the games on the PS4 Pro or Xbox One X look especially different than their vanilla counterparts. Sharper textures and better super-sampling have done little to spark interest in the gaming community other than diehard fanboys, mostly because those features are already available on $500 PCs.

Anyway, I wouldn’t have minded gimmicky accessories if they made fun games for the accessories, but that’s obviously asking for too much in today’s risk-averse market.

It’s hard to get excited for the PS5 when the PS4 is still so very underutilized. So many games are cookie-cutter me-too titles or creatively safe outings with little in the way of pushing the medium forward. If you compare the PS4’s library to the PS3’s library there’s a stark difference in quality, despite the PS3 being much harder to develop for. And the PS4 isn’t even near the same league as the kind of high-quality outings produced on the PS2. Heck, the PS4 is so starved for good games Sony had to go and have Σκιά του Κολοσσού remade from the ground up for the PS4. For shame.

Anyway, are you excited for the PS5 or are you still content with the PS4 Pro?
