PvP tactical strategy games aren’t very common; they’re a niche within a niche. I was quite surprised to learn that Korean developer Studio One and publisher Nexon have a new game coming out called Tango 5 Ανανέωση: Ηρωίδες δράσης πλέγματος, which is actually an isometric, tactical PvP game centered around grid-based maps that require fast-action reflexes and RTS-style strategy to win a round.
The game consists of four-vs-four battles that play out across rounds that only last 120 seconds. Yes, it’s a strategy game designed around speed and constant motion. This prevents the chess-style waiting game associated with some PvP turn-based games out there.
Players will attempt to win a best out of three competition, aiming to out-maneuver and out strategize their opponents. There are two key ways to victory, either capturing objectives or eliminating your foes. You can see what the gameplay is like with the trailer below.
As you can see, the gameplay is like XCOM but without the turns. In a way, it plays out similar to a MOBA but instead of there being towers to take over or minions to defeat, you simply have to wipe out the other group of players in direct head-to-head competition.
As far as gameplay is concerned, it’s a different kind of PvP title than what we’re used to, but so was Hyper Universe and Nexon managed to scuttle that into the ground by censoring the game from top to bottom and driving away its core audience.
On the upside with Tango 5 Ανανέωση: Ηρωίδες δράσης πλέγματος, there at least appears to be a decent selection of characters, including a nice cache of straight, white males. So you don’t have to worry about this ending up like BattleTech or Mass Effect: Ανδρομέδα where the developers decided to be restrict the character creators so people couldn’t properly make handsome straight, white males. This confirms that Studio One certainly isn’t racist.
